Girls Themed Rooms

Happy girl

Decorating girls and boys bedrooms based on a theme can be a challenging and rewarding task. With so many different themes it can be difficult to decide on how you're going to decorate. In this topic were going to look at ways to decorate girls rooms using a theme.

Shortcut to the theme you're looking for:

Girls themes often include pastel colours with coordinating soft fabrics. Pinks and violets along with pastel shades of yellow can all be used as a great base for your girls’ bedroom.

Basic steps to take before doing anything else;

  • Decide on the theme with your daughter.
  • Think how you’re going to achieve it, i.e. paint/wallpaper/stickers/fabrics/characters etc.
  • Look at the scheme as a whole and decide which colours work with those paints/wallpapers/stickers/fabrics etc so the room is co-ordinated.
  • Make a list of EVERY item you need, and purchase them (remember nothing's free).
  • Clear the room and put dust sheets down.

TIP: Make realistic promises to your daughter(s) in terms of outcome and timescales, you should allow at least two days to complete the room.

We’ve started you off with some ideas below, remember to let your daughter(s) have input into the process of decorating.

Princess and Fairies

Young girls always love to let their imaginations go wild and dream of being a princess playing with fairies. This is a really common theme so the good news is there’s plenty of choice when it comes to decorating.

Always start any decorating project by thinking about the overall colour scheme. Princess and Angel themes work well with soft complementary colours like powder lavenders, yellows and or course pinks.

If you want to introduce a little more colour to the walls use either a complementary colour for a contrast or a related colour to add harmony. Look at our pages explaining the colour wheel for a better understanding.

Once the paint is dry you can start to add the details of the theme. A great inexpensive way to create the dominant features of this theme is to apply an inexpensive pack of wall stickers (such as Stikarounds). To complete the walls you can add a co-ordinating border.

Stikarounds are quick and easy to apply, they’re easy to remove (ideal for when she changes her mind and wants to change her room again!) and are inexpensive.

Groovy chick for groovy chicks

For a slightly more mature room kids have recently gone crazy over the licensed design; Groovy Chick. Start by following our advice above and decide on the colour scheme (remembering what colours work with items you want/have bought). Paint the walls a slightly darker shade of pink or yellow. Be careful not to go too dark!

Once the paint is dry apply an inexpensive pack of Groovy Chick Stikarounds and add a co-ordinating border. Stikarounds are quick, easy to apply, are cheap and easy to remove, great for when she changes her mind.

Co-ordinate the room with matching duvet covers and curtains. Cover pillows and cushions in co-ordinating fabrics.

For the furniture try to use a funky bed that differs little from a traditional bed, always try to use matching or co-ordinating wardrobes, chests and shelves. We’ve got a great Princess Carriage themed bed that would work great here.

Groovy Chick accessories include many different light shades. These are a great way to tie a whole theme together.

Countryside

Paint or wallpaper the top half of the room a sky blue trying to not go too dark. Remember to paint the ceiling so the room gives the impression of being in the open. Some people leave the ceiling white but when creating a themed room it often includes using the ceiling to make the theme even more immersing.

When the paint is dry add rolling green hills on the walls and a happy sun shinning in the sky. Once this is dry you’ll already have made a big difference in the room and all that’s needed now is the finishing touches. Wallpaper or stickers can be bought cheaply which is already pre-cut and ready to apply to the walls, use animal stickers and anything that works with what you’ve done so far.

Add bright colourful fabrics, without much of a pattern, to bedding and curtains. Perhaps make round sun cushions using soft fury fabrics. Grass green carpets and rugs look great with this theme.

Animals

Girls love animals, so why not incorporate them into a themed bedroom?

The overall look of this theme can be down to your daughter. Ask her what colour walls she would like, and assuming it’s not black, paint the walls in it. Using The Colour Wheel, find colours that work with the colour the bedroom is now painted in, and either find a matching border, or try painting one yourself to add contrast.

When including some ideas remember to decorate items such as the bed headboard, picture frames, light shades and other furniture. A good way to decorate this is with pre-cut wallpaper or wall stickers.
